Customers are mixed about the sound quality of the headphones. Some mention that the sound is very good, crisp, and clear. They also say that the isolation does a good job of preventing sound leaking out and reduces outside sound. However, others say that sound features are definitely lacking, the left headphone seems to sound quieter than the right, and that there is barely any bass. They say the game sound glitches and that surround sound doesn't work on everything they plug it into.

I have owned other Sony headphones over the years, never the "Gold" or any other PS branded headphones, read about the previous Gold being fragile, so I cannot comment on the headband issue and/or if it will be the same? The quality seems good, but to be honest for $100 I have purchased other wireless headphones for less that have equal if not better build quality or robustness, these seem very light which is for a purpose but they don't seem robust or designed for abuse so treat them as such.
I also don't have PSVR, just a PS4 console, so any benefits with that are unknown for me?
Pros:
Comfortable, ear cups are big and fit over my ears nicely and fit my larger head size.
Lightweight, I would say you can wear these for a long time and have limited issues other than battery life.
Sound is good so far.
Companion App is nice, but limited on game selection.
Love the all Black color, but they used Piano Black on some of the components so it may be finger print prone.
Set-up is easy as it gets.
Cons:
USB Dongle, don't lose it and/or damage it, because Sony doesn't offer it as a replacement part, the fact it protrudes in front of your console may be prone to this.
Buttons are small and print is tiny on the controls, hard to read, but you do learn where they are so maybe a moot point?
Battery life, not as good as the controller when charged 1:1, the headphones deplete faster. Be prepared to charge these daily after a long gaming session. Was hoping Sony increased the mAh of the battery, no specs yet so I'm thinking they are the same as the old Gold?
Not active noise cancelling (knew this going in, but some tend to think they are). Would have been a nice +
Included USB cord for charging is too short for my needs, I use a AC USB adapter plugged in next to my sofa, so I use a longer cord to charge.
"L" & "R" is hidden behing the ear piece unless you slide them down the entire way, hard to see and in Black. Note to those who don't know, the "PS" logo should point to your Back when wearing. Volume Buttons are on your left ear.
Jury is still out on durability
Long story short I think sony may have finally cracked the code on a console's stereo headset for online gaming that is comfortable, durable, and easy to use out of the box.
Onto the other aspects of the headset:
1) Audio Quality: You could do a lot worse, but finding a good gaming headset with good audio will always be a problem. Booms are handled effectively enough, with adjust-ability on either the PS4 or PS3's headset app. Teammates on Overwatch, A Way Out, Battlefield 1, and other online games came through loud and clear.
2) Mic Quality: I come in loud and clear so long as the audio quality of the games Voice is setup correctly. Mostly use it with the PS4's party chat functionality and I rarely have to repeat myself, even though I tend to be soft spoken and mumble a lot lol. So this is a blessing in its own right. Down side is that it can pick up what I'm munching on and on occasion the controller if you're sensitivity is too high.
3) Battery: Gotten a good 8+ hours out of it. I usually leave it charging on a USB charging station.
4) Buttons: good ol'sony quality buttons with well placed mute button for easy access.
It doesn't look, feel, or behave like cheap garbage. It looks like something an adult would use. If you're looking for something only an Audiophile would care about then skip this headset. If you need something that lets you be heard, lets you hear, provides reasonable 7.1 simulation, and won't break to quickly with regular use. Then splurge a little from the 50 dollar headsets and get this. Setup is easy, just plug in the dongle and go.
Final note 3.5mm wire is still included for those occasions the battery dies and you need to plug into the controller directly. This passive mode isn't as good as when it is powered on, but if you're gaming session lasts beyond the charge, you can easily fall back on this. Provided you don't lose the cable.
These do not feel like the same fate will befall them.
The first thing I noticed getting them out of the box was how light they were. That's good for longer sessions. They seem like a well engineered product and avoid feeling cheap with premium feeling trim and ear cups.
The fit is comfortable but I've never had "head crush" issues with the golds and have never tried the platinums to compare.
Sound is where these shine. They're distinctly louder than the previous iteration and at least to my ears, present a more full and warm low and mid range. The mic started off a little low for my party but was easily adjusted.
Sidetone is still a thing and works well, with the virtual 7.1 surround option showcasing a wide sound stage that maintains a crisp and well mixed presentation. The battery is still the paltry 570 mah so be prepared to charge before you use. The offerings in the companion app were limited to just 3 custom, developer enhanced profiles. Kind of a bummer.
Sure, these aren't Sennheiser audiophile masterpieces but they aren't garbage as so many reviewers may make them out to be in comparison to the Astros, Turtle Beaches and Steel Series coveted by the community. These are possibly the most attractive wireless option in the price range if these are primarily for PS4 gaming. They just work. They have all the buttons you need for chat (in the same spots as the previous model.)
If you liked the gold wireless headset you might just love these. I do.
