I'm a racer (CAT 3 Masters so nothing special), so I do a lot of training whenever and wherever I can. I'm always concerned about my safety, especially lately while I have been riding alone (solo rides due to Coronavirus). I ride on diverse roads that include highways, rural farm roads as well as surface roads in our city. Each presents different safety concerns from distracted city drivers, speedy open road cars and trucks that are angry when lycra a clad guy is on their roads. So, I need safety! So, my wife purchased this from Amazon for my birthday. I could not wait to test it out.
Setup was a breeze. I charged it for a couple of hours, then mounted the bracket on my aero post - they include multiple adapters for all types of seat posts. I placed it as far down as I could so as to avoid interference from my rear wheel, but low enough so that my small seat pack does not obscure the light at all (or radar). Pairing was a breeze. I have it paired with my Garmin 530. My 530 is also paired with my iPhone and a power meter and a Wahoo HR monitor. For the light, I just went into setup, detected new sensors, and pow, it was there and all working in a few moments. I was ready to ride.
I clipped in and hit the roads and in summary, this new device was amazing. It never missed a car, no matter what type of road I was riding on. It even successfully negotiated problem spots like hills and turns . Even when I was stopped at a streetlight, it would let me know cars were approaching from behind. The user experience and audio and visual notifications on my device were great, and well thought through. I have a lot going on with my Garmin, it helps me with food/fluid intake reminders, lap timers, road hazard warnings and now cars approaching - this integration was seamless and overlays every other notification screen. Well done Garmin. I was very surprised that it will mark multiple approaching cars, right on my screen. Impressive. It missed one motorcycle that was tucked in behind a car. Understandable.
It also seems that cars were more aware of me vs. my standard very bright rear blinky. Perhaps it is because the light mode changes as a car approaches? Not sure, but the cars were different yesterday on my ride and I appreciated it. I was different, too. While I still looked over my shoulder when I needed to make a move that would have placed me in the lane, I did make changes to my habits. When I was alerted to an approaching car, I moved further right - as far as I safely could. Of course there is the safety benefit from moving that far to the right, but also makes me seem much more car friendly. Maybe that is why cars behaved differently.
I have not done a group training ride and probably will not be able to for at least several weeks. Other reviews and several cyclists I know say it works just as well riding in a pack. I would not have purchased it if others had not said how great it is in a group, since normally, that is the bulk of my riding. Maybe in a future software release, it can detect if I am the last in the group and only blink when a car approaches if I am last in the group. I hate being blinded by the blinky lights of my riding buddies. Super annoying, but worth it. We will see what this one does in the future.
I have no comment on battery life yet. Yesterday was a 4 hour ride with lots of cars. Battery was fine. I hear it last about 6 hours.
Future versions I believe will get better battery life, brighter light and will be smaller. I would not hold out, though. For the price, buy it now. It is a solid performer that is just what a cyclist would want.
Happy Birthday to me! Thanks, wife. :)
- Picks up cars about 4-5 times farther back than I can hear them
- No issues found so far with false positives or false negatives
- Will detect multiple vehicles simultaneously
- Only picks up vehicles that are moving in your direction and faster than you. This will include other cyclists if a fast pack is overtaking for example but not others right on your wheel. Similarly, if a car comes up behind you then slows down to match your speed they will fall off the radar until they move to overtake. This is by design and I think works well but make sure you are aware of the functionality.
- The audio queue can be turned on or off. I currently set it to off (still have blinky lights at top and graph along left side) as I am more interested in cars behind me when I am going to make a maneuver (move left in the lane for a turn or roll off the front of a paceline). I don't personally need notified of every car passing me as I would almost certainly hold my line in the road anyway.
- Blinky light mode has ~16 hours of battery (tested by rundown on my desk) and ~7 hours solid. It seems plenty bright to me in all settings. The flash mode by default is also a fairly slow pulse that both saves battery and minimizes the annoyance to other riders in a bunch. When a car is detected the light flashes faster. Good design. Using it on blinky I can charge it the same time I charge my head unit as both are ~16 hours.
- Light looks clean on the bike and comes with bands for round or aero posts. I was able to mount it at the top of the seattube below the seatpost clamp and it looks almost integrated that way. Quarter turn mount has proven secure.
- Wahoo does not have the lighting control so you will need to turn this on/off manually

Muy satisfecho de la compra.
Like many reviewers, I ride mainly rural roads where nobody does the speed limit. I've been relying on my Hafney mirror (amazon purchase) to confirm overtaking vehicles. I'm always surprised by the number of vehicles without daytime running lights or using parking lights rather than headlights which aren't always obvious until they're upon you. And motorcycles have always startled me as they are much faster than normal traffic. So I was really pleased when the RDU chirped to let me know there was traffic behind and at one point, it indicated six vehicles! A quick glance in my mirror confirmed this.
It's going to take a few rides to get used to relying on the Varia but now I can concentrate on avoiding potholes, cracks, etc. It's been a positive first experience - I just wish it wasn't so darned expensive!
I've ordered a seatpost clamp mount as I don't want to depend on the rubber band holding the unit to the seatpost and am looking to buy an outfront mount for the RDU.
